1982 | Glass: Artist/Designer/Industry
“NEW ROCHELLE A sometimes astonishingly beautiful exhibition of glassware will be open at the Castle Gallery of the College of New Rochelle, New York until Nov. 12. titled ‘Glass: Artist/Designer/Industry,’ the show focuses on works by four artists.
As the title would suggest, one of the things the exhibition’s guest curators, Don Shepherd and Douglas Heller, wish to explore is the relationship between an artist's ‘pure’ work, conceived and executed alone, and the role as a designer of glass to be made by others in a factory. In every case, however, the pieces were produced on a rather small scale, and, indeed, the word ‘workshop’ would sometimes be more appropriate than ‘industry.’
What these works show that is more important, however, is that what has long been termed crafts is a field that has been utterly transformed. A great deal of what we see is simply art, the equivalent, even the equal, of the finest paintings and sculpture. This is probably clearest in the work of Don Shepherd, who was born in California in 1930.
The gallery is on the small but beautiful campus near downtown New Rochelle. You will have no trouble finding the Castle Gallery, which is in a building that looks exactly like one. It is open Sunday through Friday, 1 to 5 P.M., and closed Saturdays.” (excerpt) –John Caldwell, The New York Times , Sunday, September 26, 1982.
