1977-1980 | St. Mary’s Hospital

For this new eleven-story hospital in Brooklyn, New York, Don served as the project interior designer and graphics and signage designer. He also designed furniture for special areas in this vibrant and deeply culturally-oriented project.

“Hospital administration and staff shared their belief with me that the hospital environment plays an important role in the healing process. To me, this identified the key design challenge of this project and I embraced it. We created a process that included the key representatives from the administration and at the appropriate moment, solutions were developed in concert with each department entity. We developed criteria that helped us value design choices based on nurturing attributes. I learned that this kind of process is not only rational and manageable, but that it also yielded a very personal solution.” –D.A.S.

Namesake Statue

A five foot statue of St. Mary was designed by Don for the Main Lobby. Master metal artisan, Tony Minervini, fabricated the statue in a metalworking process know as repoussé. Parts of the design are raised in relief from the back or the inside by means of hammers and punches. Definition and detail can then be added from the front by chasing or engraving. Minervini founded Artistic Metal Works in New Jersey in 1975.
