1976 | Rikers Island Prison Visitors' Center

The City of New York Department of Public Works commissioned Don to create artwork for the space where an incarcerated person would spend time with family and other visitors. His “Birds in Flight” is a mixed media mosaic of vibrant pattern and birds flying in sunny morning fog. The piece aims to reflect the positive and emotional quality of this meaningful place for people to come together.

Birds in Flight

Mosaic: 9’ tall x 13’ wide

“The surface materials were primarily a wide variety of sheet stained glass — opaque, translucent, semi-opaque, opal, opulent and some pot glass. I also used some glass drop jewels and beach pebbles.

“All of the above was laminated onto mirror which in turn was laminated onto 3/4” plywood. A latex grout was applied around all of the surface materials and the border.

“The mirror has varying degrees of visibility, depending on the physical characteristics of the stained glass over it. There is a very unique and elegant iridescence to the piece and an intriguing kinetic quality as it is effected by people moving by in front of it.” –D.A.S.
