1971 | Glass America

“Glass America is a group of creative artists/designers working for a revolution in visual glass concepts and glassmaking techniques. We approach this problem with the belief that we can bring to the collector of today, the finest quality and most exciting artistic glass to be found anywhere.” –From Glass America brochure, 1971.

“My greatest excitement has always come from probing the nature of materials that I am working with. Glass is a dynamic medium for direct, improvisational working — squeezing, pulling, corseting — and then encouraging it to escape. I am completely engrossed with the adventure of working with this luminescent material as it goes through the transition from a hot viscous fluid into a frozen mass.

“It seems that in the history of glassmaking, moulding has usually taken a backseat to free-blowing or completely handcrafted pieces. My ‘squeeze-moulding’ and ‘blowout’ techniques are designed to allow the glass to do its own special thing within a framework of possible solutions. I feel that this gives the pieces greater vitality.” –D.A.S.
