1965 | Sacred Heart Church
About five miles east of the Pacific Ocean sits the Sacred Heart Church in Eureka, California — the town where Don was born. It was the first Catholic church on the West Coast to be built in-the-round, which means worshippers are seated completely around the altar. Although Don was working out of his studio in New York at the time, he felt the pull to take on this project. Its architectural design and the spiritual expression its interior called for represented the new approach to church life that he was immersed in crafting at the time. And it was his home town, after all.
